Overcoming fear of the gym

Overcoming fear of the gym

There was a time (not so long ago!*) when I really struggled to make fitness a consistent part of my life. I had a load of reasons not to go that seemed totally legit at the time: I had to work late, I was too tired, I was too busy, I forgot to put my kit in the car etc etc. However, I now realize that my “reasons” for avoiding fitness were actually excuses because I was afraid of the gym. It was somewhere that only really fit people went. Somewhere that the unfit got judged. And somewhere where I had literally no idea what I was doing, so I would rather avoid it if I could. There’s no getting around the fact that for some of you the gym can feel like an intimidating place when you’re first starting out. But I am hoping to share a few experiences and tips that mean you might be willing to give it...

Why weight training is so good for you

Why weight training is so good for you

Discover your inner strength.....  I had just been to the gym for a fun weight training session with my coach Luke. Although I didn’t know it for sure, the gyms were getting quieter and I had a feeling this may be the last session I was going to have there for a while. So when I got home, I started to look to see what equipment I could fit into my spare room. That night, Lockdown was announced and I hit that ‘buy’ button without any hesitation.  3 months later and I am typing this up after getting up early to do a workout at home with the weights I was able to purchase before every company ran out and/or started charging £50 for a set of 2kg dumbbells.  If you had told me a few years ago that I would be so upset at the thought of not being able to go to the gym that I created my own mini home...

There is nothing wrong with having physique goals, but there is so much more to exercise. And once you find those reasons, I can guarantee you’ll actually enjoy exercising rather than dread it, and you will reach your goals in a way that you love and the results will actually be sustainable. I may not have been through a weight loss body transformation, but this doesn’t make my journey any less inspirational so let’s tell you a little more about it…I’ll keep it brief... On first glance, you may look at me and think I have always been into my fitness. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. When I was at school, I would do anything to avoid as many...

How weight training improved my life

How weight training improved my life

I can honestly say that resistance training has improved so many aspects of my life. But before I get into that, I want to give you a bit of background info so you can see what a big jump for me this was. And if I can do it…….anyone can do it! It all started back in 2014 when I saw a photo of me at the work Christmas Party. I had been pretty slim all my life, but my weight was starting to creep up and I didn’t like the way I felt - clothes that used to be comfortable were suddenly starting to feel tight. I just didn’t feel good about myself, and I realised I had started to not care about myself. I had a massive sweet tooth. I would have 3 sugars in my coffee and I would happily eat a whole packet of biscuits or have a slice of cake for breakfast. Growing up, I found it...
